The following inquiry has been received from John Fellows (john.fellows@att.net) to the Davis Rootsweb Listserv.

I have a very old bible that I will give to someone that can make a connection to the following information.
The first Page of the bible says J.F. (T. ?) Brown Married Mary Davis , March 10, 1871.
Emma Brown Married Burt Hatcher March 2 , 1911
Willie Brown Married ( Looks Like ) John Griffin July 11, 1915.

Last page says deaths:

Lucy Brown died September 7, 1873

E or L ittie Brown died August 18, 1888
Edward Brown died May 30, 1876
Sallie Brown died February 9, 1900
W. A. Brown died January 30, 1900
Jessie died October 10, 1901
James November 10, 1906

The bible came from Kansas to Texas.
Before that it could have been in Illinois, Indiana or Ohio. I really don’t know where it really lived.

I have tried to handle the bible very carefully. If I was over a 100, I would want someone to be very gentle with me. I have not been able to find any other information in the bible.

John

DGS recently received the following request for assistance. Can any of our readers contribute information to the puzzle? I will forward your responses to her.

Many years ago I found an old home about to be demolished. I retrieved many postcards and a few family photos that I would like to get to a descendant of the Beard family:

William Alfred Beard, circa 1859, England, living in District 4 Dallas in 1930 Census, age 79
Wife: Annie, born in Georgia, apparently deceased at time of 1930 Census
Emma Beard, dtr, born in Nevada 1885—listed as ‘single’ in 1930 Census, age 45

The Beard family residences:
Rt 4, Mesquite (1925)
4526 Leland St, Dallas (1929)
1719 Park Row, Dallas (1911)
181 Park Row, Dallas NOTE: 2 different addresses for Park Row, appear to be early 1900
2841 Britten [?] St, Dallas

In 1940, a member of the family, ‘Lillian Beard’ was living at PO Box 58, Terrell, Texas.

Ms. Carter has held on to these mementos for 50 years. Wouldn’t it be great if we could send them home!

The secretary of the Hutt Valley Branch of the New Zealand Genealogy Society has asked for our help. He writes:

“During World War 2, the US Marines were based near Wellington, New Zealand, in preparation for the battles, and in recuperation from, those battles with the Japanese in the Pacific. One of those Marines was befriended by my friend’s family. They have ever since regarded the memory of that Marine with affection but they never heard of him after the war. They would like to know what became of him.

“The information I have is:
Robert Marvin McElvane,
239 New Orleans Drive, Dallas, Texas. He was with the “8th Marines”. They were based at McKays Crossing and Camp Russell near Paekakariki, about 25 miles north of Wellington, the capital city.

“Marines’ camp sign returns home: http://marinenz.com/Marines’+camp+sign+returns+home. There is talk of marking the 70 years somehow next year.”

I’m posting this request to our blog in the hopes that readers can suggest resources/a method of attack that I can use to help fulfill his request.

The Society recently received a request from a woman in East Texas whose husband (adopted soon after birth) had finally been able to find his original birth certificate in Dallas County. It provided the name and age of his biological mother, but little more data.

In addition to identifying his mother’s parents and grandparents, she and her husband want to develop a medical history of the family. She is following several avenues of research, but particularly asked if there are any specialized groups/organizations that offer advice and tips to adoptees in their family history research.

I welcome comments and suggestions and will pass them along.

Thanks for helping.

I recently upgraded my 32 bit PC with Windows XP program. I also ran my FTM 2010 Genealogy Progam on this computer.

My new computer is 64 AND ….. and I have intalled FTM 11 on the computer.

All of my old FTM files came across ok, but each file needs to be opened in the old format which immediately begins a reformating sequence. I’m ok at this point.

Issue 1 – All of The media files for a given individual are not in place. Some show some do not.

Issue 2 – I am not clear on the process of backing up a given file.

Issue 3- I need some tutorial assistance in creating libraries. I understand that the The handbook for FTM 11 will not be out for some time.

I need someone who is familiar with Windows 7 and FTM 11 to assist me.

If interested, please contact me by e-mail darthmiller@msn.com or by phone 972-377-3468.

Advise me as to your hourly rate and availability. I am retired and have a flexible schedule.

Florence R. Baker

Mrs. Baker’s granddaughter sent the photo to the Dallas Genealogical Society in the hopes that we could help her to honor her grandmother’s wish that the photo be reunited with the Terry family.

Does anyone recognize the handsome couple in this photo or know of the TERRY family? Can anyone estimate the date of the photo by their clothes?

The Society intends to donate the photo to the Texas/Dallas History and Archives Division of the Dallas Public Library and hopes to be able to add a little background/history to accompany it.

In 1955, the founders of the Dallas Genealogical Society set out the goals for the society in its charter. Among these was the objective “to assist and support the Genealogy Section of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Dallas, Texas, or to its legal successor.”

When the new downtown library building was being planned, the Dallas Morning News, in an article by Henry Tatum on 4 Aug 1977, called the downtown site the “Central Research Library” and stated that then mayor Robert Folsom distributed to the council materials describing the need for a research facility.

The current proposed Dallas City Council budget plan will severely limit access to most floors of the central library. Floors 3 through 8 will be open Thursday through Sunday for a total time of only 24 hours. These floors make the central library the prime research library for the city of Dallas. None of the branch libraries provide the resources found there. The central library will open floors 1 and 2 Tuesday through Sunday, as if this part were a branch library. In addition, the central library staff will be reduced by nearly half. All staff who shelve books will be let go, leaving reference librarians to do
this work instead of answering patrons’ questions.

Reduced access and staff for the Genealogy section of the library will hinder research efforts. Many of the other floors provide resources used by genealogists and other types of researchers. Among these are:

History/social science (8th),

Texas/Dallas history and archives (7th),

Government publications and maps (6th),

Business and technology (5th), and

Humanities newspaper collection (3rd).

The reduction in hours also hampers community use of meeting rooms located on 3rd, 5th, 7th and 8th floors, making scheduling of available rooms more difficult.

Even if you do not live in the City of Dallas or are not a member of the Dallas Genealogical Society, you are in a decisive position to provide the Dallas City Council with information on the value of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library as city budget cuts are being debated.

Individuals from outside of the city who use the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library for research bring revenue into the city of Dallas in the form of parking fees, meals at restaurants, shopping at near by stores, and sometimes hotel stays. They also donate funds for acquisitions, participate in fundraising events and donate volunteer hours to the library. These activities would be hampered by reduction in access to the research materials there. Now is the time to make your needs known to the city council.

For information on contacting the mayor and city council, click on the url below: You will be taken to a City of Dallas site where you can e-mail the Mayor and All Council Members, or select any individual council member. City Council District 14 covers the physical location of the downtown library.

http://cts.vresp.com/c/?DallasGenealogicalSo/7257b72e3d/TEST/ede9fcfa13 .

Please make the effort to contact the Dallas City Council before the proposed changes to the downtown central library are implemented.

Thank you,
Dallas Genealogical Society Board
